On
September 30, Yangtze Repertory Theatre will present "The
19th Exhibit of Asian Artists"with
oil paintings by Chen WaiLi, Ge ShuQing, Jason DeShen Cao (all from
Northeastern – Manchuria – China) and Joanna Chan, at Flushing
Town Hall Gallery, 137-35 Northern Blvd. Flushing (Queens, NYC).
The exhibition will continue until Oct. 9; there will be
an opening night reception on September 30 from 4:00 pm (press conference)
to 7:00 pm. This will be Yangtze's 26th art exhibition for Asian artists.
Chen
WeiLi was born in ShenYang, LiaoNing Province, in Northeastern
China. He received his M.A. in fine arts from LiaoNing Normal University.
A member of the LiaoNing Fine Artists Guild, he has been featured
at such prominent publications such as The People's Daily and LiaoNing
Times. He had been commissioned to create large murals by the LiaoNing
city government. His works have been collected by the Ministry of
Culture, the Art Museum of LiaoNing, among others.
Ge
ShuQing who was born in FuShun, LiaoNing Province, in Northeaster
China, resides in Beijing as a professional artist. With a career
spanning over 30 years, he is best known for paintings depicting countryside
passin and romance. A resident set designer for FuShun Opera House,
Mr. Ge is the Vice President of FuShun Artists Association and a member
of China's Fine Artists Guild. His works have won several national
awards, and are collected by the Art Museum of LiaoNing.
Jason
DeShen Cao is also a Manchurian born in FuShen, LiaoNing Province,
in Northeastern China. He began painting in 1998.
Joanna
Chan, one of the best known playwrights and stage directors in
the Chinese language, with a theater career spanning over 40 years
in North America and China, trained in oil for 6 years under the great
Hon Chi-Fun in her youth, and received further training in drawing,
painting, and graphic design at the Art Institute of Chicago, and
Teachers College, Columbia University. After a 28-year hiatus, she
resumed painting in earnest in the late 1990s. More recently, she
trained with the painter, Michael Simone, M.M. Her art works (oils,
water colors and computer designs), many of which were based on her
extensive journeys through the Middle East, the Soviet Union, Eastern
and Western Europe, Northern Africa and China, including Tibet and
the Gobi Desert, have been presented in solo and group exhibitions
in upstate and downtown New York. In late 1999, her oil painting,
Jerusalem '98, was one of the top 60 selections among nearly
1,700 entries from 19 countries in the National Catholic Reporter's
Jesus 2000 contest. Another oil, An Outburst in Late Spring
was selected by the National Oil & Acrylic Painters' Society for
the "BEST of America! 2003"exhibition.
Yangtze
Repertory Theatre of America was co-founded in 1992 by the
acclaimed and highly prolific playwright/director/painter and former
Artistic Director of the state funded Hong Kong Repertory Theatre,
Dr. Joanna Chan. Its mission is to produce works for and by Asian
artists. Since then, it has presented 91 cultural events, and
has become New York's most significant entry point for dramatic works
from Chinese-speaking countries and a place of collaboration for artists
from various parts of Asia. Beside Yangtze's acclaimed annual theatre
productions, the organization has also co-presented 25 art
exhibitions, 13 productions of new dance works, and 13
musical concerts. Noted artists presented by Yangtze in the past include
Noble Laureate Gao Xing-Jian and the great Japanese dyework master
